A New Way of Seeing

The stop/motion project 'A New Way of Seeing' is so far precisely how I think first year design has been for me. I made the decision to come and study a BDI with, lets be honest, less knowledge and skills than most of my peers, and the visual and creative world I am being exposed to is a completely new way of seeing. This idea alone is what has inspired my clip project, which shows the overwhelming world of first year design.

Coming to design school I had little knowledge of programs and what skills I would need to succeed, but I still knew I wanted to come thanks to the Faculty of Architecture and Design Handbook, 2012. This handbook outlined all the courses possible at this school, and it was the career opportunities outlined under media design specialisation that was the decision maker into enrolling. (Victoria University of Wellington. (2012). Faculty of Architecture and Design. p. 87)

The stop/motion is supposed to “describe my position on design” (Victoria University of Wellington. (2012) DSDN101-Project 003– ‘The Clip’– Design Brief. ).
As I have chosen media as my specalisation, but as this might change, I have chosen to focus on how the experience has been for me so far, and portray being overwhelmed with options and the design world. he storyboards have been done in cartoon form to reflect my chosen discipline for now, media.

The clip will start with a character walking towards design school and looking a little nervous. Then once inside this is when he will be bombarded with design. There is three sections, to cover the three disciplines, and in each section the character will be running around, overwhelmed with what he is seeing.

He will enter an industrial world, with hammers, models and materials. Then a culture and context world when images from our lectures are thrown at him and at one point almost knock him over! The media part will take place inside photo-shop with the character being dragged in and played with in the program.
The finale of the clip is the character getting outside the doors where he first entered and while pausing to catch his breath, overwhelmed as he has been, he will still be intrigued and will go through the doors again to enter the design world once more, but with “a new way of seeing”.
